Green Oak

Fresh Sawn or Green Oak refers to timber cut fresh from a log and ranges in colour from pink to pale honey, weathering to grey.  It is renewable, as a frame lasts for over 100years, the same time it takes to grow with careful management in such schemes as FSC or PEFC.  We can cut sizes up to 300mm square and 6m long.  Larger beams are available to order in shorter lengths.

Overlap and fixing

As a basic way of working out overlap you can use a figure of 20%. For a 150mm piece you would generally have a 30mm overlap and so have a 120mm face. To convert M2 to linear metres required take the M2 and divide it by the face showing. For example 1m2 in 150mm featheredge would be 1/.120(allowing 20%overlap) is 8.33m

When working out your quantities made sure you add extra to allow for the trimming of pieces, for lengths not working out and odd pieces. It will never work out exactly and so an allowance needs to be made for the extra required.

Use stainless steel fixings to avoid tanin stains on the oak. Always screw oak and pre drill. The planks will split on the end if the timber is forced.

Start at the bottom with the thick end down and screw the thin end to the battens behind. Then lay the next piece over the top covering the fixing and overlapping about 40mm to create a weatherproof cladding. Repeat until you reach the top. The top screws will be visable, but these can be plugged with oak or left visable. For a smart finsh and ensure square edges you can box the featheredge with oak planks.
