The SC4 is perfect for the demanding woodturner, being capable of holding large workpieces yet possessing the precision and compactness to handle more delicate work. This model features an enclosed back with a full indexing plate and has pinions driven by a long ball-ended hex key to make access easy, even when large workpieces are mounted. This chuck is an insert model (the relevant choice of the insert is included in the price) which means it is easily future-proofed against upgrades and can be used on multiple lathes, even if they have different spindle threads (additional optional inserts required). "This chuck is light years ahead of the old Record chuck that I bought 25 years ago, which although came with a screw and pin chuck, was really limited in its "holding" capacity.
The SC4 chuck is really good, and although there's an optimum size for a dovetail or tenon on the workpiece, it will grip a range of sizes. with each set of jaws. The Chuck is very well made, and runs perfectly true without any vibration, And having a Hex Key to tighten it is a lot better than the type used on the SC3.
One great feature is that it's "future proof' by the use of adapters, it can be fitted to (in my case} a 3/4 x 16 tpi lathe , but will also fit a brand new machine.
The only minor down points being the plastic case is made from very brittle material, and considering the weight of the chuck it holds, is easily broken, the box on mine was smashed on receipt.
The finish is excellent apart from the "S" shaped tool to remove the chuck, it looks like it's been stamped out of a sheet of metal, and not finished at all, all of the edges being really sharp and uncomfortable to hold, I had to use "wet and dry" on it to eliminate the sharp edges before use.
All in all though, a really impressive versatile addition to the lathe, "

"This is a great 'standard' pattern chuck that seems to be compatible with the Bob Sorby Patriot Chuck, Technotools' Nova chucks and several other chucks which I forget the name of right now (NOT Axminster though). This cross compatibility means that you can use other manufacturer's jaws, so if you need a set of jaws which Record don't make, don't worry... just look further afield. This is the main reason why I settled on this style of chuck.
Another reason was that my Tyme Cub lathe's headstock screw size isn't one of the mainstream sizes (such as M33x3.5) - instead it's ¾" x 16tpi. The SC4 was one of the few chucks for which I could buy an insert in the size that I needed. A nice touch was that the insert came included in the price as well.
Gripes? Only minor stuff. The chuck has very sharp edges on the jaw slide ways and more noticably on the jaws themselves (when extended out past the side of the chuck. I have been tempted to file these down, but the chuck is still quite new and shiny and not a workhorse of the shop (yet!). I'll probably wait until I mash up the chuck a bit more before breaking out the files and sandpaper. Another gripe is that the chuck doesn't have the same jaw change mechanism of the Easy Chuck ;)
All in all a great chuck, well built and it's one of the cheapest of these 'clone' chucks from a Western supplier. I may check out the Chinese copy of these chucks at some point in the future - if they are half decent, I could have one chuck per set of jaws... no more changing jaws :)"

"Fantastic chuck for a reasonable price. It is great that this comes with whatever insert is needed for your lathe so that if you change lathe to a different size thread then it will just cost you the £15-£18 for a different insert, also handy if you have a couple of lathes and want to swap the chuck from one to the other.
Super well balanced and seriously well built. It grips extremely well and there are a huge amount of different jaw sets you can buy if you want and they are also very good value.
It comes packaged with a great faceplate, worm screw and standard jaws and if you also buy yourself a square end drive centre (£15) then you can put the chuck on and not have to remove it as it will have you covered for all jobs.
I can't recommend this chuck highly enough. It is brilliant and worth the money all day long."

"I am using this with Record DML320 midi woodworking lathe. Mechanically very sturdy and seems to be also very precise. Assembly instruction were clear and one should read them before starting. There is small leather "chip" that should be placed inside chuck to prevent locking screw from damaging lathe M33 thread! So far nothing to complain."
