JSP Powercap Active IP Powered Respirator Impact Protection

"I got this for saw dust protection during power tool milling and cutting and it's very good for this, no uncomfortable mask or steaming up of safety glasses. I don't technically need the impact visor but useful to make the respirator multi purpose. The cap part is a one suits all with back adjuster which works and keeps the cap firmly in place but I still feel like it is a little big. It's not like a welding mask or hard hat where you adjust the cage inside. On saying this its comfortable, stays in place and not heavy on the head and can be worn for long periods. In cold weather I could probably wear a thin hat under it. The the fabric type edge fitting of the visor is effective, easy to ensure it's tucked round when putting on and comfortable. I also got the stick on protective sheets to reduce scratching and they are good too. You can hear the fan running when machinery is turned off but its not loud and perfectly acceptable when in a quiet room. My problem comes to hearing protection, most defenders won't fit over the top of the cap. When the headband is big enough there isn't room between my ears and the cap to fit the cup, I don't have big ears so perhaps it's because the cap is big and sits low. I got plugs on a neck band but these aren't great either as if the strap just barely touches the cap or visor if worn front ways round then it transmits and amplifies the fan motor straight to your ears. I've found the only real solution is separate foam plugs which aren't my favourite. It could really be improved if they fitted some isolation points (if possible) for fixing hardhat defenders or if it had cut aways above the ears. Battery life is as expected but it's a shame its NiCad as this needs proper charging as opposed to the more modern Li-ion. It's not just the JSP, all similar respirators I looked at had outdated battery technology. Filters are easy to change and I've been surprised by the amount of dust trapped on the outer sponge filter which is easy to clean off leaving little on the actual filter meaning they should last a fair amount of time. Overall I'm pleased with the respirator and recommend for wood shops, not just when turning. Great price and quick delivery from Yandles as usual."

"I bought this powercap at Christmas to try it out in the pig houses as I was tortured with sinus most days with the dust and the heat combined. I have to say I use it every day and it’s 1st class. If you blow the filters out with an airline it keeps the air fresh at all times. Great job for anyone working in a dusty environment. Battery does last the 8hrs as it says. Highly recommended and wouldn’t go a day without it now."

"Ordered this the day before Christmas Eve. Received it in extremely quick time considering it being in the middle of the holidays. Put the cap to work today in the pighouses and have to say it was a 1st class job. Came out feeling good with no dust up my nose. It never steamed up which I thought it might do in the heat, easy to wear and would highly recommend over any dust mask which needless to say I’ve tried a lot but felt like I was fighting for breath in them all. I should have had this 10 years ago. For any man working in a dusty environment it’s money well spent. You have only 1 set of lungs."

"I’ve used a number of different dust masks over the years, generally all have worked to some degree, but this is the first time I have use a full face mask. Without doubt, this is absolutely brilliant, constant feed of air is blown across your face, the seal leaves your face completely clear. Works with glasses, just feels a lot cleaner. It is expensive, was really unsure about paying so much, but having used it would absolutely recommend it."

"As far as air supply to me goes, I have no complaint. The air seems clean and of adequate volume. I have no technical air quality measurements to confirm this, but I have no reason to doubt the manufacturers claims. However, before use, ie, brand new, I tested the air flow-rate with the supplied flow-meter, and it was on the lowest acceptable reading. Not exactly confidence inspiring for the future. My main criticism is the fact that it's tight on my head. OK, so I've got a big head. My wife knows this, my friends know this, how come JSP don't?"

"I put off buying this because of the cost but having now used it for the last month it’s like a breath of fresh air, in more ways than one. Firstly it’s light and comfortable although it seems to be designed for people with big heads as I have the adjustment strap very tight but I guess it would allow a thin hat to be worn. The whirring sound it makes was louder than expected and certainly stops you hearing the radio clearly but you soon get used to it once you’re working. I was concerned about weight as I have neck issues but absolutely no problems here. I used it for a few days in 5C and the cold air blown down the face wasn’t pleasant but now the warmer weather is here it’s a nice cooling breeze. I have no formal way of assessing its performance but I no longer have any dust in my nose or horrible taste after turning, however, you can still smell cellulose thinners so it would be no good for any jobs involving fumes. The filters get covered with dust very quickly and I vacuum them after a couple of hours usage. Overall I’m very happy but can’t quite see why it costs £240, seems like £150 to me but I would recommend it."

"I bought the Powercap on a whim after getting very frustrated with various masks and/or face screens that would become hot and stuffy, or fog up my glasses and generally made woodturning a discomfort. What a difference. I now wear it every time I do any work that might involve dust or that requires face protection, and it has become an important part of my workshop equipment. It takes a little while to get used to the hum of the little motor, but it is well worth it, and now that I have a pair of hearing defenders that permit use of wireless headphones and fit over the power cap, I am very comfortable. This respirator is lighter that other more expensive ones I have looked at. A good deal, and well worth the money."

"I bought this as a replacement for a previous model which has served me well for about 10 years. The rechargeable battery pack on the old one eventually died and would not accept a charge, and sadly (according to JSP) because it's now an obselete model, a replacement battery pack in the same form was not available. "Seems a little flimsy when you first pick it up but after quite a lot of use I can confirm that it is pretty robust. I have a full beard but this has caused no issues with the kit - far better than some other masks I have used. The battery pack easily lasts a full day and whilst the fan seems noisy at first it soon becomes just part of the background noise and I still listen to the radio as normal. One of the best features is the wash of air on the inside of the mask. Initially the air seems cold but the sensation soon goes and the benefit is the screen says completely free of condensation - this is a real bonus compared to other mask/face shield combos, especially as I also wear specs. The snap fit top plastic box that the mask comes in is great as it keeps dust etc out and holds the assembled mask, charger etc with plenty of space for spare filters etc. My only real criticism is the material seal between face and mask - this seems a little delicate for the velcro fixing to the extent on mine the black outer layer has come away from the foam core. It is a consumable item and I suspect the size of my beard has a lot to do with this. I think this seal would work much better with some 3mm neoprene wet-suit material. The incorporated bump cap has already proved itself when picking up a piece of abrasive from the floor below the lathe and coming up to collide with the bottom of the tool post slide! All-in-all I recommend this bit of kit."
