Sycamore (Acer Pseudoplatanus UK) Air Dried Woodturning Blanks
Product Description
Similar to maple, the wood of Sycamore trees is predominantly comprised of the sapwood, with some darker heartwood streaks also found in most boards. (Though it is not uncommon to also see entire boards of heartwood too.) The sapwood is white to light tan, while the heartwood is a darker reddish brown. Sycamore also has very distinct ray flecks present on quartersawn surfaces—giving it a freckled appearance—a

"Not very happy. Firstly, I ordered 2 blanks and one was out of stock. Rather than giving me the opportunity to choose another, my order was sent without the other blank, so I paid £6 postage for one £8 blank. I emailed to complain about this but have received no response. When the blank arrived it was wedged shaped. It should have been 2” thick, but was only 1.75” thick on one side. I like Yandles and use them a lot but this time I feel let down and will think twice before ordering more blanks online."

"Despite a delay in dispatching the two blanks they where as described and a good quality. The package arrived well packed and with an additional blank of Padauk for the delay. Its hard to find good service like this today. I will definitely be dealing with Yandles again."

"An excellent product, received in a reasonable time. I will certainly order from Yandle's again in future, and maybe call in sometime when I visit to research my family history in Stoke sub Hamdon."

Workability
Overall, Sycamore works easily with both hand and machine tools, though the interlocked grain can be troublesome in surfacing and machining operations at times. Sycamore turns, glues, and finishes well.
Timber Sizing Guidelines
Please note the sizes displayed are approx. Due to timber coming from all over the world starting thicknesses vary up to 1/4 Inch depending on the origin. We use the umbrella guides of 1inch,1.5, 2, 3 & 4inch, but please be aware that all planks are planed one face to highlight the grain and to allow us to see faults which can result in under thickness. This can result in planks being under the thickness depending on the starting thickness. For example, Oak 2 inch is normally 2.1/8th before we plane which allows 2 inch thickness after we plane and 2x2 spindles or blanks. Native Ash is often 17/8th to 2 inch after drying and before we plane. This can plane to 1.75 inch and result in 1.75 inch x2 inch spindles. Whilst we always try and maintain the thickest board possible, sometimes it can be under-size. If you require a finished size of 2x2 we recommend purchasing a larger blank such as 3x3 & machining this back yourself. If you require sawn spindles or blanks please state in the comments section of the order and we can cut to order in our sawmill. Please note this service can take up to 10 working days.Collect in Store
