English Yew Pen Blanks – Pack of 5

These pen blanks are produced from English Yew (Taxus baccata), one of the most distinctive and historically important timbers native to the British Isles. Valued for centuries for its strength, beauty, and durability, English Yew remains a highly desirable material for fine turning and small decorative work.

English Yew has a long and well-documented history in Britain, most notably for its use in traditional longbows from the medieval period. Many existing Yew trees in the UK are exceptionally old, with some specimens dating back hundreds to over a thousand years, reflecting the timber’s remarkable longevity and resistance to decay.

The wood is visually striking, typically showing warm golden to orange-brown heartwood, often with rich reddish/purple tones, contrasted by a pale creamy sapwood. Grain patterns can vary from straight and even to highly figured with swirling or flame-like effects, giving each blank a unique appearance. English Yew finishes exceptionally well, taking a smooth polish that enhances its natural colour and depth.

Although botanically classified as a softwood, English Yew behaves much like a hardwood in use. It has a medium density and hardness, turns cleanly, and is well-suited to pen making and other small turned items. Its fine texture allows for crisp detail and a high-quality finish.

English Yew is a protected and carefully managed species in the UK, meaning commercially available material is typically sourced from responsibly managed tree work, storm damage, or essential felling. As a result, high-quality Yew suitable for turning is relatively uncommon.
