With the Tormek SE-77 Square Edge Jig, it is easy to set your wood chisels and plane irons for sharpening to a square corner. The design gives you the best conditions for a successful sharpening with the highest precision over the final result. You can also set the jig for a slightly convex shape.
The tool is aligned in the jig along the flat top surface of the tool. The SE-77 Square Edge Jig has a flat shoulder that makes it easy to mount the tool correctly at an angle of 90°. The pressure from the center of the plate is distributed to the edges, positioning the tool firmly in the jig without having to force it to stay in place. Then you just have to check the sharpening angle and set the jig at the right height on the universal support, and away you go!
The SE-77 Square Edge Jig has been fitted with a movable end that can be adjusted using two small adjustment screws, which allows for fine tuning the settings if necessary. This might be required if the tool is very narrow or not exactly parallel to the grinding wheel, or if the blade is slightly twisted. Fine tuning the settings is done in seconds by releasing one of the adjustment screws and tightening the other.
Most plane irons benefit from having a slightly rounded shape. The degree of chamfering depends on the type of hand plane and is roughly equivalent to the thickness of the shavings produced by the plane. The adjustable end of the SE-77 Square Edge Jig allows you to achieve the optimum shape for your tool. When sharpening to chamfer the edges, center the tool below the pivot point of the jig, marked with a line. The more you release the adjustment knobs, the greater the pendulum movement, which increases the chamfer.
The jig’s construction also makes it possible to position and sharpen tapered chisels, e.g. Japanese chisels. The safety stops keep the jig securely on the Universal Support and prevent the tool from sliding off the grindstone, so there is no risk that you will hurt your fingers when sharpening. The jig fits wood chisels and plane irons up to 77 mm (3″) width.

Ok for the first few uses, but whilst setting up a chisel for sharpening the clamping screw sheared off where it is fixed into the lower section of the clamp. A disappointment as i have had to return it and await a replacement and therefore cannot sharpen some of my tools.

I’d have to say the Square Edge jig is very easy to use. Put the tool in the device. Set the angle. Sharpen. Good for novices because the jig takes care of the skill and art required, the Tormek does the sharpening and the user brings the two together. Its really satisfying to use.
