Exotic & Rare Indian Rosewood (Sonokeling) Hardwood Pen Blanks – Pack of 5
These pen blanks are produced from Indian Rosewood, commonly known as Sonokeling (Dalbergia latifolia), one of the most highly regarded rosewoods in the world! Native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, Sonokeling is prized for its strength, stability, and striking natural appearance, making it a premium choice for fine woodturning.
Sonokeling has a long history of use in high-end furniture, musical instruments, decorative veneers, and precision tools. Its combination of durability and beauty has made it a traditional export timber for centuries, valued by craftsmen for both structural integrity and visual impact.
The timber is renowned for its dramatic colouration. Heartwood ranges from deep chocolate brown to purplish-brown, often highlighted by bold black or dark violet streaks. The grain is typically straight to slightly interlocked, with a fine, even texture that finishes exceptionally well. When polished, Sonokeling develops a rich, natural lustre with excellent depth and contrast.
Indian Rosewood is a dense, true hardwood, offering high strength and wear resistance. It turns cleanly with sharp tools, holds detail well, and produces a smooth surface suitable for fine finishes. Its natural oils contribute to stability and help resist moisture movement, making it well-suited to small precision items such as pens.
Due to overharvesting in the past, many rosewood species are now restricted and carefully regulated. Sonokeling is considered relatively scarce, and responsibly sourced material suitable for turning is increasingly difficult to obtain, adding to its desirability.
