Martin Saban-smith Danish Oil is food safe EN71-3.
A finish I reach for when a piece wants strength and protection without losing the feel of the wood. It’s a blend of natural tung oil and a low-odour, biodegradable solvent, and that combination gives you a deep, penetrating finish that sits thin in the timber rather than forming a skin on top. Because it soaks in and cures within the wood, it won’t chip, flake or peel. Build it up over a few coats and you’re left with something durable, properly protective, and quietly respectful of the grain underneath.
Application
- Sand your work down to your chosen grit. I’d suggest 400.
- Apply the oil with a paper towel or rag.
- After a few minutes, wipe the excess back off the surface.
- Allow 20 minutes between coats, and no more than two coats before you let it cure.
- Leave it to cure thoroughly for at least 24 to 48 hours before buffing and putting the piece to use. Curing time shifts with the temperature and humidity in your workshop.
- Recoat whenever it needs it.
- For best results, use within six months of opening.
Uses: At its best on pieces that want a soft, satin glow. Fruit and salad bowls, and anything you’ll handle and live with. Build enough coats and buff it and you can take it all the way to a gloss, but satin is where it feels most at home.
Colour and Aroma: Translucent pale brown in the tin. It warms and slightly darkens the wood as it goes on. Expect the characteristic smell of solvents and waxes while you work.
Container and Storage: Supplied in a 500ml berg-top tin. Store in a cool, dry place, ideally between 10° and 30°C (50° and 90°F) where possible. Protect from extreme heat and freezing, and keep out of direct sunlight.
Longevity: Stored well, it’s best used within six months of opening. It’s a curing oil, so it will gradually thicken over time. That’s simply the nature of the stuff.
Food Contact Safe?: Yes. Tested to EN71-3.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
Do not ingest. Wear appropriate protection for skin and eyes when applying. If in eyes: rinse well with water and seek medical advice. If swallowed: seek immediate medical advice. Lay saturated rags and towels flat and allow to dry before sensible disposal. Do not pile-up saturated rags.
