Sapele woodturning blanks in bowl blanks and sapele blanks.

Sapele is a popular African hardwood known for its rich color, interlocked grain, and impressive versatility. Often compared to mahogany for its similar appearance and tonal qualities. Sapele offers a slightly denser, more visually dynamic alternative, making it a favorite among woodturners.

In appearance, Sapele ranges from medium to dark reddish-brown with a natural luster that enhances its visual appeal.

It machines and turns well with sharp tools, though care must be taken with the interlocked grain, which can occasionally lead to tear-out. It sands smoothly, holds detail well, and finishes to a rich, polished surface with minimal effort. Its moderate density provides a good balance between durability and ease of work.

Top Features of Sapele:

  • Warm reddish-brown tones with natural depth and luster

  • Distinctive ribbon or striped grain, especially in quartersawn cuts

  • Turns and machines well with sharp tools

  • Finishes beautifully with a rich, glossy surface

  • Excellent choice for bowls, spindle work, furniture accents, and instruments

Please note the sizes displayed are approx. Due to timber coming from all over the world starting thicknesses vary up to 1/4“ depending on the origin. We use the umbrella guides of 1”,1.5”, 2”, 3” & 4”, but please be aware that all planks are planed one face to highlight the grain and to allow us to see faults which can result in under thickness. This can result in planks being under the thickness depending on the starting thickness. For example, Oak 2” is normally 2.1/8th before we plane which allows 2” thickness after we plane and 2×2 spindles or blanks. Native Ash is often 17/8th to 2” after drying and before we plane. This can plane to 1.75” and result in 1.75”x2” spindles. Whilst we always try and maintain the thickest board possible, sometimes it can be undersized. If you require a finished size of 2×2 we recommend purchasing a larger blank such as 3×3 and machining this back yourself. If you require sawn spindles or blanks please state in the comments section of the order and we can cut to order in our sawmill. Please note this service can take up to 10 working days.
