Choose your size Ash Wood turning Blanks, from bowl blanks to spindle blanks.
European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is a light-colored hardwood with a creamy white to light brown heartwood, and very pale sapwood that’s often difficult to distinguish. It features a straight, prominent grain and a coarse but even texture, giving it a clean, striking look—somewhat similar to oak but lighter in color.
Occasionally, it may have olive-brown streaks or darker heartwood known as “olive ash,” which is highly prized for decorative work.
It turns cleanly and predictably on the lathe, offering a smooth finish with minimal tear-out. The wood is tough and elastic, yet machines and sands well. It takes stains and finishes evenly, though its open grain may need filling for ultra-smooth results. Its toughness makes it ideal for functional as well as decorative turnings.
European Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is a light, strong, and attractive hardwood with a bold grain and great turning properties. Its ease of shaping and smooth finish make it a favorite for turned items like tool handles, bowls, and furniture components.
Please note the sizes displayed are approx. Due to timber coming from all over the world starting thicknesses vary up to 1/4 Inch depending on the origin. We use the umbrella guides of 1inch,1.5, 2, 3 & 4inch, but please be aware that all planks are planed one face to highlight the grain and to allow us to see faults which can result in under thickness.
This can result in planks being under the thickness depending on the starting thickness. For example, Oak 2 inch is normally 2.1/8th before we plane which allows 2 inch thickness after we plane and 2x2 spindles or blanks. Native Ash is often 17/8th to 2 inch after drying and before we plane. This can plane to 1.75 inch and result in 1.75 inch x2 inch spindles.
Whilst we always try and maintain the thickest board possible, sometimes it can be under-size.
If you require a finished size of 2x2 we recommend purchasing a larger blank such as 3x3 & machining this back yourself.

The wood is great, but the marker pen you used to write the price on is a nightmare as it soaks deep into the wood and requires significant sanding to remove to the point that it creates a noticeable dip in the wood where you have sanded it off. Please can you use stickers in future?

The poorest quality I’ve ever had from Yandles. I purchased four 6 x 2 and three 5 x 2 blanks. They were all poorly cut with single blanks ranging anywhere between 1 1/2 inches running to 1 3/4 and sometimes closer to 2inches on the same blank, so a real pain to true up. I think there was one was actually round, all of the others were oval in form. I can’t be bothered to go to the sycamore page to put a review up, but I purchased the exact same number of blanks and they were not any better. I totally get that you’re unlikely to get a 2 inch thick blank because of the processing, but these were truly very poor indeed. Maybe two stars is being generous.
