Banksia Nut / Pod (Banksia grandis)

Harvested from the Australian Banksia grandis tree, these seed pods are renowned for their intricate internal patterns and striking organic texture, offering a unique alternative to traditional woods.

Each Banksia nut features a hard, woody outer shell with eye-catching seed cavities that become beautifully pronounced when turned or polished. The interior is porous yet durable, making it well-suited for small to medium-sized lathe projects such as pens, bottle stoppers, handles, lidded boxes, tea lights, and decorative items. With the right tools and finishing techniques, the naturally dark reddish-brown tones of the Banksia nut can be enhanced to reveal a polished, almost sculptural effect.

Sustainably sourced and kiln-dried, our Banksia nuts are cleaned and selected for size and quality to ensure suitability for woodworking applications. While each nut varies slightly in shape and cavity distribution—no two are alike—this variation adds to their appeal, giving each finished piece a truly individual character.

Whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional woodturner, Banksia nuts offer a rewarding material to work with. Their unique structure may require some experimentation with stabilizers, fillers, or resins depending on your intended outcome, but the results can be both distinctive and eye-catching.

Please note the sizes displayed are approx. Due to timber coming from all over the world starting thicknesses vary up to 1/4 Inch depending on the origin. We use the umbrella guides of 1inch,1.5, 2, 3 & 4inch, but please be aware that all planks are planed one face to highlight the grain and to allow us to see faults which can result in under thickness. This can result in planks being under the thickness depending on the starting thickness. For example, Oak 2 inch is normally 2.1/8th before we plane which allows 2 inch thickness after we plane and 2x2 spindles or blanks. Native Ash is often 17/8th to 2 inch after drying and before we plane. This can plane to 1.75 inch and result in 1.75 inch x2 inch spindles. Whilst we always try and maintain the thickest board possible, sometimes it can be under-size. If you require a finished size of 2x2 we recommend purchasing a larger blank such as 3x3 & machining this back yourself. If you require sawn spindles or blanks please state in the comments section of the order and we can cut to order in our sawmill. Please note this service can take up to 10 working days.

I can’t fault Yandles to be honest, prompt and efficient delivery and you get exactly what you are paying for. The Banksia nuts were both roughly the same size and shape which is excellent for the candleholders I intend to turn.

Bought a nut as part of a load of turning wood and am so pleased I did. The one seed has become 6 mushroom heads. My wife has just ordered 4 more – she wants me permanently in my shed.

I saw these recently on youtube and so ordered a couple. I was really pleased with the two I ordered and will use them for a project soon.
