Sawn board: As the title says is a board as it comes off the log saw. Sawn timber is rough in texture, with splinters and you may get inconsistencies in how flat and regular the boards are. Sawn timber requires work for a consistent finish. Whilst given a nominal size you do get variations within the sawing. This could be up to 6mm variation. As a rule sawn boards are not cut to length. Whilst we try to keep things to a minimum you can have a bow, twist or spring in the board, especially on longer and wider boards.
Cut to size: Sawn boards that have been ripped to width. The thickness will be as per the closest available thickness, but the boards will be parallel ripped to the correct width. As per sawn it is rough in texture, with splinters and you may get inconsistencies in how flat and regular the boards are. Sawn timber requires work for a consistent finish. Whilst the ripping is as accurate as possible it can be +-4mm and the thickness can have a variation up to 6mm +-
Planed all round (PAR): Wood that has all four faces along the length planed to regulate the plank so it is ready for use. The timber is cut to size and then the edges are machined so that the piece of timber is smooth on all faces. We work to a 1mm +- tolerance for machining. The boards are thicknessed not surface planed. Whilst the straightest possible timber is selected, the thicknesser will follow the shape of a plank especially on longer lengths and this can result in bows of up 5mm over a 2m piece.
