A hollowing tool lets you:

  • Hollow out the inside of bowls

  • Create deep vessels with narrow openings

  • Form decorative hollow shapes

  • Control wall thickness inside a piece

The Hollowing Tool gives you better reach and control than a standard bowl gouge for this type of work.

The straight shafted hollowing tool has a square cross section, tapered towards the end to allow for clearance of shavings when starting to hollow out.  It is used for the initial hollowing out of bowl blanks prior to using the curve tools for clearing out the sides and any undercut areas of the bowl.

Carbide Tipped Tools

Carbide cutting tips will last up to 50 times longer than High Speed Steel (HSS). K10 carbide has an extremely high hardness of 92HRC. This completely removes the need to re-sharpen the cutter.  When the cutting edge eventually dulls, each tip can simply be rotated so a new cutting face is used. The Round and Square cutters can be rotated 4 times, the triangle cutter can be rotated twice. After all faces have been used, replace the cutting tip with a new one.

The round steel shaft sits comfortably on the the tool rest. It is 10mm diameter with enough strength to eliminate vibration from the cutting tip.

This set is suitable for all kinds of spindle and bowl turning. Can be used with softwoods and hardwoods.

HSS vs Carbide?

Traditional wood turning chisels are made from HSS. It takes many many hours of practice to master the use of a HSS bowl gouge.  It can also take a while to master sharpening of the chisels too. It is therefore not surprising that people who have learned those skills remain very loyal to HSS chisels.

Carbide scraper tools require no sharpening or steep learning curve to use them. New wood turners can pick up a carbide chisel and get instant, satisfying results. The surface finish is not as good, but with an extra couple of minutes sanding, carbide chisels achieve exactly the same results as HSS chisels. Carbide turning tools have been responsible for introducing many new people to the world of woodturning.
