This useful centre is held in the chuck with the 50 mm standard jaws to give a quick-mount solution for spindle turning, meaning the chuck need not be removed from the lathe.

Personally, I find this spur a bit “brutal’ and prefer to use a”coronet” style one with a spring loaded centre for spindle turning.
It fits well into the 50mm jaws of the chuck, and it’s handy to be able to use it for turning a work piece down to size to fit the chuck, then simply remove it without moving the chuck.
Where I find it most useful is when turning bowls with a “live edge” where the convex bark surface of the log needs to initially face the headstock, and pre-drilling with a forester bit makes a good flat face for the spur.
Also useful for the initial turning of small bowls, there there’s not sufficient depth for a “screw” or width for a face plate.
Quite pricey when compared with items like chuck thread adapters which must cot a lot more to make, however the quality is good, so should last.
