Exotic Mopani Hardwood Pen Blanks – Pack of 5
African, exotic hardwood, Mopani pen blanks. Supplied in sizes of approximately 3/4″ × 3/4″ × 6″ long (often larger), these blanks are cut from a single board, meaning each piece will showcase unique grain variation — perfect for pen turning, small artisan projects, and fine woodworking.
Origin & Rarity:
Mopani (Colophospermum mopane) is native to Southern Africa, found across regions including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and beyond. It’s a wood prized by turners and woodworkers for its rich character and density.
Colour & Grain:
Each blank displays medium to dark reddish‑brown heartwood, often with deeper streaks and a warm glow, contrasted by pale yellow sapwood. The grain can be interlocked or figured, with a fine, even texture and natural lustre that reveals itself beautifully when finished.
Hardness & Workability:
Mopani is extremely dense and hard, with a Janka hardness of around 3,390 lbf (15,060 N) — making it one of the hardest commercially available exotic woods. This density gives your finished piece outstanding wear resistance and durability, though it can dull cutting tools quickly and requires sharp edges and careful technique when turning.
Finish & Aesthetic:
Once turned, Mopani sands and polishes to a deep, high sheen, enhancing its rich colour and complex grain. Its striking contrast and lustrous finish make it a favourite for pens, knife handles, inlays, and decorative turned objects.
