1000+ Year Old German Bog Oak Pen Blanks
These exceptional Bog Oak pen blanks are cut from timber that is over 1,000 years old, sourced from Germany and originally sawn in the 1960s. After being cut, the wood was left untouched for decades before being transported in 2023 to Yandles, where it was prepared for use as high-quality planking and turning blanks.
Bog Oak is not a species in its own right, but oak that has lain buried in peat bogs for centuries or even millennia. The oxygen-free environment of the bog prevents normal decay, while the acidic peat and mineral-rich water react with the oak’s natural tannins. Over time, this process transforms the timber’s colour to a deep brown, charcoal, or almost jet black, giving Bog Oak its unmistakable appearance and historic character.
Historically, Bog Oak has been used for ceremonial objects, jewellery, carvings, and fine furniture, prized for both its beauty and its connection to ancient landscapes. Each piece is effectively a fragment of history, preserved naturally long before modern woodworking tools existed.
Despite its age, Bog Oak remains a true hardwood, typically comparable to or slightly harder than modern European Oak once fully dried. The mineralization process can make it slightly more brittle, but it turns and finishes beautifully, taking a high polish and producing a striking contrast in grain and figure.
Bog Oak of this quality is extremely rare. Supplies are limited, unpredictable, and cannot be sustainably harvested in the conventional sense—once a bog is exhausted, no more can be produced. This makes every blank unique and irreplaceable!
