Yandles Green Oak Featheredge Cladding. Price per square metre (including overlap)

3-7 working days from the point of order

Featheredge cladding is a traditional type of cladding that is made by cutting boards with a tapered profile. At Yandles, our cladding is cut-to-order onsite, so we can guarantee excellent quality every time (featheredge cladding that is cut and then stored tends to suffer from mildew). Our Green Oak Featheredge Cladding is ideal for projects of all sizes and preferences – buildings, porches and fences are popular structures this cladding is used for.
Oak featheredge needs fixing with stainless steel screws to avoid a reaction with the tanin in the oak causing blue staining. Oak featheredge is traditionally laid horizontally. Starting at the bottom, the narrow section of the taper is fixed into the battens behind and then overlapped by 30mm with the thickest part of the taper at the bottom. It then covers the fixing.
Featheredge Cladding Length
Boards are supplied in random lengths, between 1.8m – 4m, although we try to keep it as consistent as possible,
If you require a specific length, please send your enquiry to timber@yandles.co.uk or call 01935 822 207, option 3. We will do our best to ensure the length meets your requirements; however, this is dependent on the availability of trees on-site at any given time.
The maximum length we can provide is 4m. With small orders under 10m2, the length is dependent on other orders being processed by the sawmill at the time.
Overlap
We allow for a 30mm overlap included in the m 2   price.

As Oak dries out over time, it can develop cracks and splits known as shakes. These tiny cracks run along the grain of the wood, which means that they do not affect its structural integrity. This cracking process happens faster in warmer weather, as the sun and wind speed up the drying process and can even cause shakes to form on recently cut green oak. As such, these should not be seen as faults, as it is a natural process. It is possible to reduce cracking in green oak by adding wood oil for protection.
One of the main reasons for posts to rot is the constant wetting and drying of the post. To help extend the life of the post, you can slope the soil or concrete the post is set in so that water doesn't gather at the base of the post. Sealing the post with oil at the level it goes in the ground also helps extend the life as it reduces the moisture absorption into the post.

Green Oak or Fresh Sawn Oak is a type of timber that is cut fresh from the log. This material ranges in colour from pale pink to honey-hued, and over time weathers to a light grey.

This type of oak can be used to create frames that are long-lasting, typically lasting more than 100 years. Green Oak also has a much smaller carbon footprint than most other building materials, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

Thanks to careful forest management practices such as those outlined by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), new Oak trees are able to be grown alongside existing trees in a way that ensures healthy forests for years to come, making Oak a renewable building material.

We plane all our Green Oak ex-inch. This means we plane it as thick as it will go from the original section size. In order to achieve a smooth finish, it is necessary to plane down the surface by a certain amount - typically around 4-6 mm. However, this means that the final product will be slightly smaller in size than it was originally.
When it comes to planing green oak, there are several important factors to consider. First, unlike many other types of wood, green oak has high levels of tannins that can react with metals and cause unsightly blue stains. In addition, because green oak is quite heavy and difficult to handle, it tends to get stuck in thicknessers and can cause burn marks or white marks on the surface. For these reasons, we use a hand planer when working with this kind of wood.
