Air Dried Oak Fireplace Beams. Finished Air dried oak beams that are ready to go. The beams are selected planed and then finished with a high speed sander. This is designed ensure a smooth finish, but means that each piece is unique as the sander will smooth out chipping and dents in the beam whilst smoothing out any knots and irregularly easing the edges on the front two edges to create the perfect feature that is ready to go. This gives each beam a unique style. For the finish we only use the best. Tung oil is designed for oak and doesn’t react with the tanins. It deeply penetrates the wood fibres, creating a water-resistant, durable finish with a natural look while enhancing the wood’s grain. For the wax we use Renaissiane Wax. Designed by the team behind the London Museum, Renaissance Wax the waxes combined Nature’s best qualities with the advantages of modern technology adding protection, whilst enhancing the beauty of the timber.
Air dried oak is a natural product. It is dried outside. As it dries it shrinks causing cracks on the surface. These are not structural, but add to the uniqueness of the piece.
Air dried oak dries naturally outside. This means it can crack and twist, which creates a unique feature and is not considered a fault. In line with grading rules the timber can be up to 10mm out of straight over a 2m length, although we always try to keep this to a minimum.
