Ropalo Lacewood is a striking exotic hardwood prized for its shimmering, lace-like figure and warm, reddish-brown hues. This species stands out for its unique appearance and consistent grain, making it a favorite among woodturners and decorative woodworkers.
The most distinguishing characteristic of Ropalo Lacewood is its dramatic flecked or “lace” pattern, created by medullary rays that catch the light and produce a shimmering, almost three-dimensional effect.
The background color typically ranges from light to medium reddish-brown, often with subtle golden or pink undertones, providing a rich visual depth.
It is moderately hard and has a fine to medium texture, though the grain can cause some tear-out if tools aren’t sharp. With proper technique, it cuts cleanly and finishes beautifully, taking oil and polish well for a smooth surface.

This wood is really lovely! Needs really sharp chisels otherwise the end grain drags, but the grain is absolutely stunning. Sanding sealer and Briwax bring a glossy shine.
