Product Description

Waney edge cladding is a traditional type of cladding that is made by cutting boards straight from the tree and then laid to show the natural edge of the tree in an overlap horizontal pattern. Each board features one waney edge, with exposed bark, and one smooth, straight edge. The waney edge overlaps the straight of the board by approximately 50mm hiding the fixings and creating a pattern of natural edges on the side of the building. At Yandles, our cladding is cut to order on-site, so we can guarantee excellent quality every time. This gives us more flexibility than other merchants. Our waney edge cladding is ideal for projects of all sizes and preferences - buildings, porches and fences are popular structures this cladding is used for. Over time the bark will fall off as the board dries leaving a the natural edge of the board. This Wanery Edge Cladding is supplied in boards that are 25mm thick. Waney Edge Cladding Length Boards are supplied in random lengths between 2m - 4m. For larger overs we can be length specific in most cases, however, this is dependent on the availability of trees on-site at any given time. The maximum length we can provide is 4m. With small orders under 10m2, the length is dependent on other orders being processed by the sawmill at the time. If you require a specific length, please send your enquiry to timber@yandles.co.uk or give us a call on 01935 822 207, option 3. We will do our best to ensure the length meets your requirements; What does it mean by random widths? Trees are natural products and as such the widths are not uniform. The further you cut into a tree the wider the board will get. We can mitigate the variation in the widths of the boards by cutting specific sections of the tree to allow us to keep the sizing as consistent as possible. However, there will always be some variation in the boards. This cladding will come in a range of widths between 200mm and 400mm. We provide an additional 20% coverage in order to account for the overlap of the cladding. If you require a more specific width, please send your enquiry to timber@yandles.co.uk or give us a call on 01935 822 207, option 3.

Cracking in Green Oak

As Oak dries out over time, it can develop cracks and splits known as shakes. These tiny cracks run along the grain of the wood, which means that they do not affect its structural integrity. This cracking process happens faster in warmer weather, as the sun and wind speed up the drying process and can even cause shakes to form on recently cut green oak. As such, these should not be seen as faults, as it is a natural process. It is possible to reduce cracking in green oak by adding wood oil for protection. One of the main reasons for posts to rot is the constant wetting and drying of the post. To help extend the life of the post, you can slope the soil or concrete the post is set in so that water doesn't gather at the base of the post. Sealing the post with oil at the level it goes in the ground also helps extend the life as it reduces the moisture absorption into the post.

What is Green Oak?

Green Oak or Fresh Sawn Oak is a type of timber that is cut fresh from the log. This material ranges in colour from pale pink to honey-hued, and over time weathers to a light grey. This type of oak can be used to create frames that are long-lasting, typically lasting more than 100 years. Green Oak also has a much smaller carbon footprint than most other building materials, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Thanks to careful forest management practices such as those outlined by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), new Oak trees are able to be grown alongside existing trees in a way that ensures healthy forests for years to come, making Oak a renewable building material.

Fixing

Use stainless steel fixings to avoid tannin stains on the oak. Always pre-drill to prevent splitting on the end of the boards.  Start at the bottom with the thick end down and screw the thin end to the battens behind. Then lay the next piece over the top covering the fixing and overlapping about 50mm to create a weatherproof cladding. Repeat until you reach the top. The top screws will be visible, but these can be plugged with oak or left visible. For a smart finish and to ensure square edges you can box the featheredge with oak planks.
