Cleaning & Care

For waxed canvas

Your apron is going to get dirty. If you use it everyday it's going to change (for the better). Waxed canvas has been used for many years without any washing or cleaning. But if you feel you must clean your apron there's a right and wrong way to do it. Most important is not to overdo it.

The Wax canvas we use is intended to last. But it can't be dry cleaned or washed in a machine. Those processes will strip the wax from the canvas. Just like you wouldn't wash a pair of boots or a leather sofa, you shouldn't wash your apron.

Lightly brush off dried mud and dirt with a brush. Start with plain water for cleaning. Hose it off, gently use a scrubbing brush, rinse, and let it dry. Less is more. For stubborn spots or stains try saddle soap this may help clean specific areas. Test a small area first.

For the Leather

Mix up a mild soap solution. Run a few ounces of warm water into a large, open container. Add about a teaspoon of liquid dish detergent and stir until the soap is completely dissolved. The goal is to produce a very gentle solution you can use to wipe down your apron without damaging it.[1]

  • Too much detergent can cause leather to deteriorate and strip it of dyes, resulting in a blotchy, discoloured appearance.

Wet a soft towel or sponge. Submerge the towel or sponge in the soapy solution. Wring out the excess liquid. The towel or sponge shouldn’t be sopping wet, just damp. If it’s too wet, the water can soak into and saturate the leather, potentially causing even more damage.

  • Use a soft cloth. Rough fabrics may leave scratches on soft leather if you’re not careful.

Wipe down the outside of the jacket. Run the damp towel or sponge in long, smooth motions rather than forcefully scrubbing. Pay particular attention to water spots, discoloured patches and places where dirt or oil have built up on the leather. Clean the entire Apron or panel, re-wetting the towel when needed.

Clean off the soap and pat the apron/panel dry. Wipe the apron/panel again, this time using clean water to clear away any soap residue. Make sure there’s no standing water remaining on the jacket. With a dry towel, pat the leather until it is completely dry. Hang the jacket up in a closet and allow it to finish drying.

  • Direct heat can be very bad for leather, especially if it has just been moisturized, so don’t dry the jacket in a machine or use a blow dryer.
