Yandles Green Oak Gate Posts are made from fresh-sawn European Oak, a material renowned for its strength and durability. Whether used indoors or outdoors, these posts are built to withstand even the harshest conditions and will last for years to come. These have a wide range of possible applications including fencing, garden structures, bollards, boundary markers and more.
These oak posts come untreated and may contain knots, in bark and some sap. The oak will have some surface checking and splits, which are part of the natural drying process. While some people may see these as faults, they do not affect the structural integrity of the post and are instead seen as adding natural character that is unique to each piece.
We offer a high-quality hand planing service if you would like a smoother finish. For more information about planing please see the ‘Planing’ tab below.
Our green oak posts in a section size of 175mm x 175mm are available for collection or delivery in 2.4m lengths and are available in a one-way top. All posts are cut slightly over the stated length using a chainsaw and will require a final cut to achieve a smooth finish and the exact length.
These are also available in section sizes of:
125mm x 125mm
150mm x 150mm
200mm x 200mm
We also offer a grading service, if you would like these graded please  email timber@yandles.co.uk  with your enquiry or give us a call on 01935 822 207, option 3.
As Oak dries out over time, it can develop cracks and splits known as shakes. These tiny cracks run along the grain of the wood, which means that they do not affect its structural integrity. This cracking process happens faster in warmer weather, as the sun and wind speed up the drying process and can even cause shakes to form on recently cut green oak. As such, these should not be seen as faults, as it is a natural process. It is possible to reduce cracking in green oak by adding wood oil for protection.
One of the main reasons for posts to rot is the constant wetting and drying of the post. To help extend the life of the post, you can slope the soil or concrete the post is set in so that water doesn't gather at the base of the post. Sealing the post with oil at the level it goes in the ground also helps extend the life as it reduces the moisture absorption into the post.
Green Oak or Fresh Sawn Oak is a type of timber that is cut fresh from the log. This material ranges in colour from pale pink to honey-hued, and over time weathers to a light grey.
This type of oak can be used to create frames that are long-lasting, typically lasting more than 100 years. Green Oak also has a much smaller carbon footprint than most other building materials, making it an environmentally friendly choice.
Thanks to careful forest management practices such as those outlined by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), new Oak trees are able to be grown alongside existing trees in a way that ensures healthy forests for years to come, making Oak a renewable building material.

We plane all our Green Oak ex-inch. This means we plane it as thick as it will go from the original section size. In order to achieve a smooth finish, it is necessary to plane down the surface by a certain amount - typically around 4-6 mm. However, this means that the final product will be slightly smaller in size than it was originally.
When it comes to planing green oak, there are several important factors to consider. First, unlike many other types of wood, green oak has high levels of tannins that can react with metals and cause unsightly blue stains. In addition, because green oak is quite heavy and difficult to handle, it tends to get stuck in thicknessers and can cause burn marks or white marks on the surface. For these reasons, we use a hand planer when working with this kind of wood.
