Product Description

Yandles Green Oak Posts are made from fresh-sawn European Oak, a material renowned for its strength and durability. Whether used indoors or outdoors, these posts are built to withstand even the harshest conditions and will last for years to come. Additionally, they are incredibly versatile, with a wide range of possible applications including fencing, garden structures, retaining walls, architectural elements, and more.  These oak posts come untreated and may contain knots, in bark and some sap. The oak will have some surface checking and splits, which are part of the natural drying process. While some people may see these as faults, they do not affect the structural integrity of the post and are instead seen as adding natural character that is unique to each piece. We offer a high-quality hand planing service if you would like a smoother finish. For more information about planing please see the 'Planing' tab below.  Our green oak posts in a section size of 150mm x 150mm are available for collection or delivery in  2m , 2.4m,  3m  or  3.6m  lengths and are available graded to TH2/D24. All posts are cut slightly over the stated length using a chainsaw and will require a final cut to achieve a smooth finish and the exact length.

"Very good quality. Was very surprised when they turned up all fresh and planned. Slightly over length as well leaving plenty of extra to square off. "

"Walking into the yard I saw a lovely piece of oak and thought 'i hope that's mine'... it was :) well chosen and worth the money to have it planed. Needs a bit more work in the workshop to remove some of the planing marks but that's to be expected. Lovely wood, well chosen by the mill and a good price."

Cracking, Marks and Staining in Green Oak

As Oak dries out over time, it can develop cracks and splits known as shakes. These tiny cracks run along the grain of the wood, which means that they do not affect its structural integrity. This cracking process happens faster in warmer weather, as the sun and wind speed up the drying process and can even cause shakes to form on recently cut green oak. As such, these should not be seen as faults, as it is a natural process. It is possible to reduce cracking in green oak by adding wood oil for protection. One of the main reasons for posts to rot is the constant wetting and drying of the post. To help extend the life of the post, you can slope the soil or concrete the post is set in so that water doesn't gather at the base of the post. Sealing the post with oil at the level it goes in the ground also helps extend the life as it reduces the moisture absorption into the post.In damp conditions you can get damp conditions you can get blue staining on green oak. This is a reaction between the tanin in green oak and metal. It will clear off easier with oxalic acid or builders acid or can be sanded off. It is natural occurance. There can be mud on sawn beams. The environment of a working sawmill means that mud can get on the beams, especially in winter. Whilst we try to ensure it is kept to nothing or a minimum, it can happen and will easily brush off when dry.

What is Green Oak?

Green Oak or Fresh Sawn Oak is a type of timber that is cut fresh from the log. This material ranges in colour from pale pink to honey-hued, and over time weathers to a light grey. This type of oak can be used to create frames that are long-lasting, typically lasting more than 100 years. Green Oak also has a much smaller carbon footprint than most other building materials, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Thanks to careful forest management practices such as those outlined by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), new Oak trees are able to be grown alongside existing trees in a way that ensures healthy forests for years to come, making Oak a renewable building material.

Planing

We plane all our Green Oak ex-inch. This means we plane it as thick as it will go from the original section size. In order to achieve a smooth finish, it is necessary to plane down the surface by a certain amount - typically around 4-6 mm. However, this means that the final product will be slightly smaller in size than it was originally. When it comes to planing green oak, there are several important factors to consider. First, unlike many other types of wood, green oak has high levels of tannins that can react with metals and cause unsightly blue stains. In addition, because green oak is quite heavy and difficult to handle, it tends to get stuck in thicknessers and can cause burn marks or white marks on the surface. For these reasons, we use a hand planer when working with this kind of wood.
