The Tagua nut when dried out can be carved just like elephant ivory; it is often used for beads, buttons, figurines and jewlery, and can be dyed. More recently, palm ivory has been used in the production of bagpipes

The kernels are picked up from the ground after the ripe fruit has detached from the tree and forest animals have taken care of the pericarp, or harvested when ripe and the pericarp manually removed. As the nut shrinks when it hardens a small hollow cavity can form in the centre.

It is often not possible to know whether the inside of the nut will have a small cavity in the centre until it is cut into. Therefore, when carving, it is common to either incorporate the hole or cavity into carvings or not carve deep enough to reach a potential cavity.

Please note the sizes displayed are approx. Due to timber coming from all over the world starting thicknesses vary up to 1/4 Inch depending on the origin. We use the umbrella guides of 1inch,1.5, 2, 3 & 4inch, but please be aware that all planks are planed one face to highlight the grain and to allow us to see faults which can result in under thickness.
This can result in planks being under the thickness depending on the starting thickness. For example, Oak 2 inch is normally 2.1/8th before we plane which allows 2 inch thickness after we plane and 2x2 spindles or blanks. Native Ash is often 17/8th to 2 inch after drying and before we plane. This can plane to 1.75 inch and result in 1.75 inch x2 inch spindles.
Whilst we always try and maintain the thickest board possible, sometimes it can be under-size.
If you require a finished size of 2x2 we recommend purchasing a larger blank such as 3x3 & machining this back yourself.
If you require sawn spindles or blanks please state in the comments section of the order and we can cut to order in our sawmill. Please note this service can take up to 10 working days.

Quite difficult to handle due to the size and hardness of the Tagua nut but once peeled, a delightful challenge.

A good high quality selection of tagua nuts. All in first class pristine condition. I have carved hundreds of these over the years, they take very fine detail and polish to a beautiful lustrous shine.

I have used tagua from yandles once before and I was so happy that I bought a bulk supply for carving. I have seen video of people using dremel to carve them, but I use a die grinder for better torque and get great results.

For the Repair Cafe in Sherborne I was presented with some carved birds to fix, one of which had lost its beak. I made one from wood, but it doesn’t look right. I thought I’d see if I could get some of these exotic nuts from Equador from which the originals were carved. YES I could get some, not direct from Equador, but from Yandles of Martock, just half an hour away – RESULT. They’re inexpensive too.
