Lignum vitae woodturning blanks are pieces of lumber cut from the heartwood of the lignum vitae tree, Guaiacum officinale , known for its dense and durable properties. These blanks are highly sought after by woodturners due to their exceptional hardness, self-lubricating qualities, and attractive greenish-brown color. Lignum vitae is one of the hardest and heaviest woods in the world, making it ideal for turning projects that require resilience and longevity. Woodturners often use lignum vitae blanks to craft items such as tool handles, mallet heads, bearings, and decorative pieces. Due to its rarity and difficulty in sourcing, lignum vitae woodturning blanks are prized possessions among woodturning enthusiasts.
Often used for Lawn bowls due to it’s density and stability and is one of the few timbers that actually sinks in water!
Limited Stock
Known as one of the rarest timbers you can now buy, Lignum Vitae is now listed on CITES Appendix II, and is on the IUCN Red List. It is listed as endangered because populations are severely reduced and exploitation for both its wood and resin extracts have continued for hundreds of years.
We sourced the last of our stock from an old mill that went bust 10-years ago. These pieces were brought into the UK some 25-years prior to arriving here at Yandles. They are well seasoned & may well be the last Lignum you can buy in the UK of any size. We have roughly 20pcs approx 7x7x8′ & 4pcs at 44′ long. Please note, when these are gone, they really are gone!
